What we learned from Saturday's college football action (abridged version)

We're going out to watch the LSU/Florida game tonight, so we're not going to post anything on that until tomorrow - provided it's a good game.

But on to some of the other stuff from today.

1. Halftime color guys are stupid beyond belief. This made me so mad it had to go #1. At halftime of the Oklahoma/Texas game, they had Craig James and Doug Flutie talking about which of the 13 remaining undefeated teams in college football could remain undefeated. Flutie said he thought only LSU could do it, but also, wait for it...Boston College. James meanwhile said he was looking at Ohio St. to also potentially remain undefeated, but said he thought only LSU would do it. Thankfully, Saunders took a shot at both these idiots before they went to a commercial break by asking why they didn't even mention USC and Cal. Seriously, are James and Flutie on crack?! How in the hell do you forget THE CURRENT #2 and #3 teams in the country?! Yes they have to play each other in the not so distant future, but you really think one of those two teams won't go undefeated? I'll admit that USC still has to play a very dangerous Oregon team, but look, the USC/Cal game will determine which one of those teams finishes undefeated. I realize halftime color guys have a limited time to get their points across, but seriously, this was just stupid. You also know you suck when John Saunders is taking a shot at you. And lastly, I hate Flutie for getting a plug in for his old school without even mentioning the Pac-10.

2. Wisconsin really isn't very good. Of course anyone who watches college football already knew this. The only reason they were ranked #5 was because they hadn't lost. They barely made it past Michigan State at home a week ago and they've gotten most of their wins against teams that even Oklahoma wouldn't schedule - like the Citadel. They're going to take a huge dive in the polls now and they deserve it. Meanwhile, how about Illinois? I'm not sure how Ron Zook does it - (cough!) illegal recruiting (cough!) - but this team is playing extremely well and the Ohio State/Illinois game could be the biggest game in the Big-10 game this year, which admittedly makes a statement about how pathetic that conference is this year.

3. The 'Ol Ball Coach is a pretty good college coach. Say what you want about Spurrier in the pros with Washington, but the man's still a damn good coach. Personally, I think Spurrier would have had better luck in the pros if he hadn't been paired up with Dan Snyder. I had my doubts about how quickly Spurrier could make South Carolina a power in the SEC, but he's already there. Plus they pretty convincingly beat a Kentucky team on Thursday that had been rolling of late. It's hard to imagine the SEC being any tougher than it already is, but it looks like that's where we're headed if South Carolina continues to get even better.

4. Even if no team finishes the year unbeaten, Oklahoma still shouldn't play in the National Championship. I can't understand why people suddenly thought after beating Texas that Oklahoma should suddenly find itself right in the mix again. Texas has already been exposed as a bit of a fraud and Oklahoma only beat them by 7. And that's probably going to be Oklahoma's toughest game, even though they play Missouri next week. So they better kill Missouri. Because if Oklahoma can only point to close wins against Texas and Missouri at the end of the season, they really don't deserve to be in the National Championship. I know pretty much everyone would rather see a one-loss LSU, USC, Cal or Florida over Oklahoma.

5. There's something clearly wrong with USC. They sleepwalked their way through Washington last week and barely escaped with a win. Meanwhile they've been doing the same thing against Stanford through a half of football this weekend. What's even worse is they look like they don't give a shit. Booty had three passes dropped in the first quarter (two by one receiver) and no one seemed mad at all. Needless to say, that isn't good. You almost get the sense that USC is starting to believe that if they just show up they'll win every game they play - sort of like our recent Olympic basketball teams. You'd have thought that the Washington game would have been a wake up call for this insanely talented team, but that doesn't seem to be the case. If USC keeps having these sluggish first halfs and penalty filled games, hell they won't even make it to the Cal game undefeated. They'll get beat by Oregon.

UPDATE: Wow. We can't believe Stanford beat USC. I'm actually not even sure Stanford won that game or if USC just decided to forget about playing. USC had one receiver drop 4 balls tonight, their O-line was terrible in the 4th and penalties, penalties, penalties. Also missed opportunities like not putting the ball in the endzone just before half. Just unreal. I watched Stanford play in person this year, during their third game of the year I think. They were TERRIBLE.

This however is awesome for us, or at least Dwyermaker, since he's a Cal guy. If Florida hangs on tonight, Cal will be #1 in the country. And that's pretty crazy.

I learned 2 things:

1. Pete Carroll may be a great recruiter and have a hot offensive scheme, but he's not a good coach. He shouldn't have been beaten by Vince Young and Texas. Even more to the point, he totally disrespected Stanford, passed that attitude on to his team, and lost ignominiously.

2. Les Miles, on the other hand, is a force to reckoned with. The guy has balls of steel and believes in his team. As one announcer said; "Nick who?"
