Mr. Met is still having a rough time

I'm sure most of you have seen last week's Conan clip of Mr. Met attempting suicide. Well, Conan went after him again on Monday. Mr. Met's wife is a huge whore. But I'm sure you already knew that.

ESPN likes crushing kids' dreams

Let's run the bases kids! Oh wait, ESPN won't let us do that anymore.

If you go the New York Mets web site, you'll find that their Sunday August 26th game has been changed from 1:10pm to 8:05pm. The reason is because ESPN wanted to make their Sunday Night Baseball game feature two teams in the pennant race to help their ratings - and MLB agreed to this demand by ESPN.

Nothing wrong with this, right? Well, except that the Sunday game was going to have the Mr. Met Dash going on - which has now been canceled thanks to ESPN's ratings grab. The Mr. Met Dash is a very popular promotion, as it lets kids 12 and under run the bases with Mr. Met - and it only happens a few times a year.

Ouch. So all those kids that were desperate to run around the bases of a major league park - without getting arrested - are probably pretty pissed. Let's just hope they don't do this.

And as for ESPN, it's good to see they aren't letting the little things, like angering their future audience, get in the way of dominating all sports coverage.

Say it ain't so

When the Mets leave Shea stadium in 2009, they may be leaving something behind.

As of right now, it appears that the iconic outfield Home Run Apple in centerfield won't be making the trip with the Mets to their new stadium. The 582-pound apple was first introduced in 1980 and has over the years become a fan favorite.

"We will have some sort of apple (in the new stadium)," said Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz. "It is yet to be determined what form the apple will take."

Despite the fact that the Mets plan to have a new apple in the new stadium, a lot of fans aren't taking it well at all. A group of them have started their own Web site dedicated to bringing the apple to the new stadium.

Our mission and message is simple: the Apple must stay. When the Mets move into Citi Field in 2009, the Apple must move with them. We don't want to see a new Apple, an updated Apple, or a modernized Apple. We don't want to see a replica Apple. We don't even want to see a cleaned up and repaired Apple. We want to see the same lumpy, grimy, dented, beat up Apple that's been sitting behind the center field wall in Shea Stadium for 27 years. It may be ugly 80's relic, but it's our ugly 80's relic, and we want it to stay.

The buzz among baseball fans is that the Mets will build an elaborate new one, while the old apple could be auctioned off for charity or displayed as a piece of nostalgia.

Personally, I hope the apple goes with the Mets to the new stadium. As tacky as the apple is, it's like "I Ran" by A Flock of Seagulls. A terrible experiment that got better over time but is now a classic. Why ruin it? It also shows that the club is ok with doing semi-stupid, hilarious stuff. The Yankees, who I absolutely loathe, would never have something like this at their stadium because they're huge tight-asses. And that just ain't fun.
