Monday links + college football thoughts

There's some question about which was the bigger upset, App St. over Michigan or Stanford over USC. Technically, by point spread, the Stanford upset is bigger. I actually think the App St. upset is still bigger though because they're a I-AA school that was paid to come to Michigan to take a season opening beating. Stanford at least is a Pac-10 school that plays D-1 schools all year. Although Stanford does suck something horrible. I saw their only other win of the season in person against San Jose St., and Stanford was not good. Regardless of which is the bigger upset, both say something. Regardless of who you're playing in college football, you better come ready to play. If you get supremely arrogant, like Michigan and USC did, and don't take your opponent seriously, you might find yourself looking at the worst loss in school history. It's also funny that Pete Carroll seems to be getting back to what he was known for during his stints in the pros - that he's not a good coach. Great recruiter though. As a result of that Stanford shakeup, we now have an AP poll that goes LSU, Cal, Ohio St., Boston College, and South Florida. That's, uh, a bit different from what I'm used to.

On to the links.

What we learned from Saturday's college football action (abridged version)

We're going out to watch the LSU/Florida game tonight, so we're not going to post anything on that until tomorrow - provided it's a good game.

But on to some of the other stuff from today.

1. Halftime color guys are stupid beyond belief. This made me so mad it had to go #1. At halftime of the Oklahoma/Texas game, they had Craig James and Doug Flutie talking about which of the 13 remaining undefeated teams in college football could remain undefeated. Flutie said he thought only LSU could do it, but also, wait for it...Boston College. James meanwhile said he was looking at Ohio St. to also potentially remain undefeated, but said he thought only LSU would do it. Thankfully, Saunders took a shot at both these idiots before they went to a commercial break by asking why they didn't even mention USC and Cal. Seriously, are James and Flutie on crack?! How in the hell do you forget THE CURRENT #2 and #3 teams in the country?! Yes they have to play each other in the not so distant future, but you really think one of those two teams won't go undefeated? I'll admit that USC still has to play a very dangerous Oregon team, but look, the USC/Cal game will determine which one of those teams finishes undefeated. I realize halftime color guys have a limited time to get their points across, but seriously, this was just stupid. You also know you suck when John Saunders is taking a shot at you. And lastly, I hate Flutie for getting a plug in for his old school without even mentioning the Pac-10.

2. Wisconsin really isn't very good. Of course anyone who watches college football already knew this. The only reason they were ranked #5 was because they hadn't lost. They barely made it past Michigan State at home a week ago and they've gotten most of their wins against teams that even Oklahoma wouldn't schedule - like the Citadel. They're going to take a huge dive in the polls now and they deserve it. Meanwhile, how about Illinois? I'm not sure how Ron Zook does it - (cough!) illegal recruiting (cough!) - but this team is playing extremely well and the Ohio State/Illinois game could be the biggest game in the Big-10 game this year, which admittedly makes a statement about how pathetic that conference is this year.

3. The 'Ol Ball Coach is a pretty good college coach. Say what you want about Spurrier in the pros with Washington, but the man's still a damn good coach. Personally, I think Spurrier would have had better luck in the pros if he hadn't been paired up with Dan Snyder. I had my doubts about how quickly Spurrier could make South Carolina a power in the SEC, but he's already there. Plus they pretty convincingly beat a Kentucky team on Thursday that had been rolling of late. It's hard to imagine the SEC being any tougher than it already is, but it looks like that's where we're headed if South Carolina continues to get even better.

4. Even if no team finishes the year unbeaten, Oklahoma still shouldn't play in the National Championship. I can't understand why people suddenly thought after beating Texas that Oklahoma should suddenly find itself right in the mix again. Texas has already been exposed as a bit of a fraud and Oklahoma only beat them by 7. And that's probably going to be Oklahoma's toughest game, even though they play Missouri next week. So they better kill Missouri. Because if Oklahoma can only point to close wins against Texas and Missouri at the end of the season, they really don't deserve to be in the National Championship. I know pretty much everyone would rather see a one-loss LSU, USC, Cal or Florida over Oklahoma.

5. There's something clearly wrong with USC. They sleepwalked their way through Washington last week and barely escaped with a win. Meanwhile they've been doing the same thing against Stanford through a half of football this weekend. What's even worse is they look like they don't give a shit. Booty had three passes dropped in the first quarter (two by one receiver) and no one seemed mad at all. Needless to say, that isn't good. You almost get the sense that USC is starting to believe that if they just show up they'll win every game they play - sort of like our recent Olympic basketball teams. You'd have thought that the Washington game would have been a wake up call for this insanely talented team, but that doesn't seem to be the case. If USC keeps having these sluggish first halfs and penalty filled games, hell they won't even make it to the Cal game undefeated. They'll get beat by Oregon.

UPDATE: Wow. We can't believe Stanford beat USC. I'm actually not even sure Stanford won that game or if USC just decided to forget about playing. USC had one receiver drop 4 balls tonight, their O-line was terrible in the 4th and penalties, penalties, penalties. Also missed opportunities like not putting the ball in the endzone just before half. Just unreal. I watched Stanford play in person this year, during their third game of the year I think. They were TERRIBLE.

This however is awesome for us, or at least Dwyermaker, since he's a Cal guy. If Florida hangs on tonight, Cal will be #1 in the country. And that's pretty crazy.

Derek Jeter is Johnny Drama

Yesterday SPORTSbyBROOKS let us know that the Yankees had taken money earmarked for stadium planning and used it to buy lavish things. This information was revealed via the Freedom of Information Law.

But apparently even more stuff came out. After sorting through the old documents, The Village Voice came across a list accidentally included from a road trip the Yanks took to Seattle in the last week of August of 2005. It was a crib sheet explaining which player and coach names went with which hotel-room pseudonyms. Some are juvenile, some are awesome, and some are just random as hell.

Here's the list.

Pseudonym: Simon Phoenix
Real name: Mike Mussina

Pseudonym: Bruce Almighty
Real name: Don Mattingly

Pseudonym: Austin Powers
Real name: Ruben Sierra

Pseudonym: Johnny Drama
Real name: Derek Jeter

Pseudonym: Turd Ferguson
Real name: Jaret Wright

Pseudonym: Richard Long (very clever Bernie)
Real n
ame: Bernie Williams

Pseudonym: Rickey Ricardo
Real name: Jorge Posada

Pseudonym: Joe Saturday
Real name: Hideki Matsui

Pseudonym: Harry Pelotas (yes, that's Harry Balls when translated)
Real name: Luis Sojo

Pseudonym: Sam Adams
Real name: Randy Johnson

Pseudonym: Eleven Fifty
Real name: Matt Lawton

A-Rod stayed at a different hotel so he didn't make the list. Damn shame.

Travis Henry's kids are in a lot of trouble

Travis Henry. Man, myth, legend. And of course father to nine illegitimate kids. As some of you may remember, Henry has had some trouble paying all of his child support. Which is why this upcoming news is potentially devastating to a rather large group of people.

Henry just tested positive for marijuana use and could be suspended for a year. Hope you like bread and water kids.

Yes, Henry previously served a four-game suspension from the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy in September 2005 as a member of the Tennessee Titans. Henry can appeal the latest violation, but if it's denied he'll begin serving a one-year suspension immediately.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that the NFL simply can't suspend Henry. Considering this man is the bread winner for the equivalent of an army battalion, the NFL should make special considerations. Otherwise we might get word of a starvation wave that's sweeping sections of the country.

But on the bright side, if Henry gets suspended he can always spend time with the kids. That is if he can actually remember where they all are.

Who exactly are these dolls targeted for?

A company called Round 5 MMA is coming out with mixed martial arts action figures for Christmas. The one you see above is an uncolored prototype of Randy Couture. There will ultimately be an entire series launched featuring a number of MMA stars.

While this clearly shows that MMA is on the rise, who in the hell are these things targeted for? Or maybe I'm just not in the know and MMA is actually the sport of choice for 6-year-old boys. Football? Football's for losers old man!

Something tells me that the primary audience for this doll, I mean action figure, will be 35-year-old men who live in their mother's basement. You know, just like me. Except I'm 10 years younger and live in a mansion.

Kevin Doran is the new Steve Bartman

Baseball players and fans are highly superstitious. So the last thing you want to do when your team hasn't been to the World Series in 14 years is jinx them. Some people might think Charlie Manuel did that last night when he accidentally said "Tomorrow's very important for us to lose." Don't worry Charlie, you were already jinxed. The Chicago Cubs have Steve Bartman, now Philly fans have Kevin Doran. Doran, who is the Venues editor of Penn State's newspaper The Daily Collegian, penned an article about the Phillies for the October 1st edition. As you can see above, it was just a bit off.

Man, where the hell were the copy editors?

The paper made a correction on Tuesday, desperate to change the fate of the already doomed Phillies:

So with this little blurb, I plead to you, baseball deity of all things diamond: Forgive our insolence. We really didn't mean it.

We already have the Curse of Billy Penn. The Phillies haven't even sniffed the Fall Classic since I was 7 years old when Super Nintendo was the coolest thing ever.

I really don't want to wait another 14 years.

Naturally the Phillies lost their first playoff game in years 4-2, with Rollins, Howard and Utley all going hitless. At least you know who to blame Phillies fans.

Mike Vick might have a lighter wallet after today

Most of us were aware that the Atlanta Falcons were going to eventually try and see if they could get back a significant portion of Mike Vick's $130 million contract.

Well, that day is today.

The Atlanta Falcons will try to convince an arbitrator the team deserves a refund on up to $22 million in bonus money paid to Vick. The Falcons are expected to contend that Vick knew he was in violation of the contract when he signed the $130 million deal in December of 2004, and that he used proceeds from the deal to fund his dogfighting operation.

The Falcons will be represented Thursday by team president and general manager Rich McKay and three more team officials in the private hearing in Philadelphia.

Attorneys representing the NFL Players Association will argue against the Falcons’ claim. Which means Vick might as well just give the money back now.

In all seriousness though, it's going to be exceedingly difficult for the Falcons to get the $22 million back. According to the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, bonus money earned can not be returned.

Despite that fact, the Falcons are going to give it a try. Frankly I think it'll be hard to prove that Vick is aware of anything, let alone violations of his own contract.

But hey, most people thought Isiah Thomas was going win his sexual harassment case. And we all know what happened there.

Cubs fans are delusional

This always seems to happen whenever a major pro sports team is on the verge of being sold. Rabid fan starts site asking other rabid fans to pledge money to eventually buy team. Needless to say, there better be a lot of rabid fans out there if the minimum asking price for the team - like the Cubs - is $600 million.

But hey, might as well give it a shot, right? Some loyal Cubs fans started Let's Buy the Cubbies back at the end of June. Basically, it asks people to pledge how many shares they'd buy in the Cubs at $200 a share. They don't have to pay now, just when the magical number of $600 million is hit so they can bargain with MLB.

So, they almost there yet? Uh, not even close. So far total pledges are under $400,000 which means the Cubs will probably be going to either Mark Cuban or some greedy conglomerate. But the fans are still hilariously hopeful.

My favorite comment on the site: "We're so close! Keep fighting"

If by close you mean $599.6 million away.

Lance Briggs' baby mama sues him ahead of schedule

Lance Briggs seems to be having a rough couple of months. First he blasts the Bears for not paying him enough, he then got charged for wrecking his Lamborghini, his team has started out 1-3, and now he's being sued by his baby mama.

Except this is one of the weirder suits out there I've heard of. That's because so far, even though Briggs and Brittini Tribbett aren't married, Briggs has been a pretty good father - although his baby's only 3 weeks old. So what's the problem then?

According to her lawyer, "we've got to formalize the obligation of support and right of visitation. Lance has been exemplary both as a parent and as a provider thus far. There's no animosity here, but legal necessities are not always niceties."

Talk about moving fast. Shit, she's only had the kid for 3 weeks. She also seems to be on her way to making it legally acceptable to be a complete gold digger. Hoes of the world, take notice.

I mean besides, you might as well squeeze all the cash you can out of Briggs now anyway, you never know when he's going to get into another car accident. And there goes the paycheck.
