Maurice Clarett lost by a nose

The Columbus Dispatch newspaper, which caters to Ohio State football like a crack whore in need of a fix, just got done with one of its all time best journalistic pieces.

If Ohio State football could have a Mount Rushmore of football heroes, who would they be? According to the Dispatch, Chic Harley (who I've never heard of), Woody Hayes (he won a lot of games), and two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin were all automatics. The real question was who would be the fourth.

I did all I could to elect Maurice Clarett, who taught us that you should always drive with Vodka and loaded weapons - but like Kent Brockman said, "Democracy simply doesn't work." The fourth person was decided yesterday and it's Jim Tressel, who won with a measly 91 votes. I smell vote-tampering.

While I'm still kicking myself that I didn't find this a week ago, you can actually still vote and comment, even though the contest is technically over. It's one way to voice your outrage that Clarett wasn't given his rightful place on the Pantheon of Ohio State football greats.

If you'd like to have some Photoshop fun with the original photo, or you feel that Terry Glenn and Joe Germaine were clearly overlooked, here you go.

Chic Harley played in the 1900-teens, and that's why a lot of people don't know him. He was Ohio State's first All American, and experts agree he would have won the Heisman - had one been around then.

He led OSU to their first win over Michigan, and their first conference title. Before that, OSU football was played by farmers (agricultural school) on a dirt field. It was moved to a bigger field because people wanted to come and see Harley play. Thus the need for a bigger stadium arose, and voila Ohio Stadium. That's why it's sometimes called, "The House that Chic Built." and his number is recently retired in the stadium - hence I know this, since it was just rehashed.

I guess more can be found on him at Wikipedia

Clarett certainly fell a long way, didn't he? You wonder what his NFL career might have been had he stayed on track and played at least another year or two. Instead, he's just a loser that everyone in Ohio hates.

I don't think his NFL career would have fared much better, he's just too slow and short. Pittman is a far better back, and his NFL career is pretty much over before it started, shame really.

But, that being said, if he had three brain cells instead of two, he could still be worshiped at OSU, and you can make a pretty good living off that alone.

If you've never heard of Chic Harley, you are at a huge loss of OSU school history. He was the greatest of them all. He was an equal to Jim Thorpe and even better than Archie. He could run, throw, kick, and defend and to this day he still holds the OSU record for most interceptions in a single game. Without Harley, the OSU stadium would never have been built nor would OSU be the school it is today.
