The Patriots are not good at subterfuge

The web site Touchdown.org claims to have photographic evidence of the Patriots employee who videotaped the Jets defensive coaches during Sunday's game, which is shown above. There's nothing written on the site, they just present the picture as proof. If this picture is indeed true, then I've got to say the Patriots are absolute idiots. If you click on the picture, you'll notice that the circled guy is the only cameraman or photographer on the sideline who is not aiming at the field of play. He seems to be aiming directly at the Jets defensive coaches, which is just what the AP article said:

The employee was accused of aiming his camera at the Jets’ defensive coaches, who were sending signals out to the players, sources said.

Now you might say, there's no way the guy could be that obvious. But remember, NFL cameramen and photographers are required to wear red NFL vests, like the guys in the right corner are doing. The circled guy has no red vest on - I presume because he's the Pats employee and therefore wouldn't be required to wear a red blazer.

I expected this guy to be like a Nam vet using a camcorder and be under a camo grass tarp. Not lugging a huge camera less than 30 feet from the coaches he was not so secretly taping. The guy might as well have had a sign around his neck that said "Suck it Jets, I'm videotaping you assholes."

Man, Belichick is getting sloppy.

That explains why the Jets only had 3 guys covering Randy Moss when he scored that touchdown. Whatever signals the Jets were using, obviously they were very useless.

You would think he'd stick to a camera phone, or something. That's painfully obvious, and with hundreds of eyes on the opposing sideline, someone is going to notice.

Ryan Mock said...

Hmm...I doubt a Pats employee would be allowed to stand on the opposing sideline during an away game. This is almost certainly not true. Unfortunately, the Pats were just better than the Jets. And I hate the Pats.

i bet belichick had the guy there with a camera with no film...

This is the punishment they should receive.

1) take away all rings (distribute them to the members of the '01 Rams, '03 Panthers and '04 Eagles,)

2) Forfeit entire 2007 Season, all players suspended without pay and restricted from seeking trades. through the '07 trade deadline.

3) Belichick banned from the league indefinitely.

4) Team to be sold on eBay (you know craft was involved, that's when the winning [read: cheating] started after all).

5) All players who were with the team for any 3 of the last 5 years will be ineligible for HOF consideration and have permanent asterisks affixed to all their statistics.

and one more just for fun...

6) Brady gets slapped and sterilized!

I think the hands on own throat has clearly been the Jets' defensive signal for years.

Also, Remember when Green Bay decided they didn't want Randy Moss. Can we get a quote from Favre, now?

If it's photoshopped then it's on the of the best I've ever seen. They added a realistic shadow, and have the same video graininess.

Somebody should've secretly taped the refs during last night's Ravens-Bengals game to figure out what the heck they were thinking on the pass interference call.

By all accounts, the offending cameraman was on the Patriots' sideline... this photo shows a guy on the Jets sideline. In all likelihood, this photo is just a regular cameraman who happened to be turned the wrong direction and NOT the alleged offender.

No, the cameraman was a Patriots employee on the New York sidelines. See the AP story here:

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070910/SPORTS/709100347

It mentions the following:

"New York — The NFL is looking into claims a New England Patriots employee was videotaping signals by Jets coaches on New York’s sideline during the season opener.

I'm pretty sure that "on New York's sideline" is referring to the location of the Jets coaches, not the Pats employee...

A cameraman focused on a coach instead of the game is hardly evidence of stealing signals or cheating. Hasn't anyone watched NFL Films? There is plenty of footage of coaches; obviously all of those cameramen were facing away from the play.

so is that Jets guy with boom mic standing next to him in on it too?

Still photographers wear red vests, video cameraman wear black vests.

That's not always true. The guy in the very far right corner is a cameraman and is in a red vest. Plus cameramen tend to have some kind of required orange thing around their mid section. That circled guy has neither.

Will somebody please tell Billy that all he has to do is provide me with a ticket facing the opponent's sideline and I will take care of the rest.

It's not their first time," a member of the committee, who did not wish to be identified, said.

In fact, Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan confirmed a similar incident that occurred when the Patriots played at Lambeau Field last Nov. 19. The same cameraman who was questioned by NFL security on Sunday was also the one whom the Packers removed from the sideline and escorted from the field during their 2006 game, according to Packers security official Doug Collins.

"From what I can remember, he had quite a fit when we took him out," Harlan said. "We had gotten word before the game that they [the Patriots] did this sort of thing, so we were looking for it."

I believe that since many accusations have been submitted to the league, that we will see, punishment that will fit the crime! 3 strikes and you are out!!!!! Many people have lost high paying jobs because of this and are not happy!

Here's my take—if you are calling your defensive plays in from the sidelines with hand signals that your players on the field, the Patriots sideline and everyone in the stadium can see, I do NOT consider deciphering those signals cheating. Period.

If The Hoodie is smart enough to crack that code in real time and burn you with his offense—advantage Patriots, and quit yer bitching.

But, if they are using video to record and analyze those signals over the course of a game, at halftime or whatever, it's a clear violation of the "no recording allowed" rule, and the Pats deserve a harsh penalty. Draft picks sound fair to me. Hell, give 'em to the Jets. A forfeit might be too much—this isn't why the Jets got their ass kicked Sunday—the Pats ARE that much better (and as such didn't need to cheat). Though I will say, a forfeit would be a hell of a deterrent—but what is the penalty if the cheating team loses? Set a harsh policy tied to picks and hefty fines.

Oh, and I don't want to hear any whining about them doing this in the past. If the Packers caught them last year and didn't do anything about it they can promptly STFU about it now. That means one of two things to me—they can't prove shit, and thus didn't actually "catch" anything OR they did, but didn't take it to the League because they, and everybody else, are doing it too.

The Chargers have the most overall talent in the NFL. Please God take no action before the Chargers beat them on Sunday. And, don't ban the Patriots from the playoffs. I've been waiting for the Chargers to win a Super Bowl for 37 years. When the Chargers win it this year, I don't want to hear "You guys wouldn't have won had New England been allowed to go to the playoffs." I don't want to hear that.

Has anyone done a statistical analysis of the Patriots' first-half vs. second-half performance (i.e., scoring, sacks by opponents)? It seems to me that's the only way to tell if they've been able to achieve a significant advantage by stealing their opponents' defensive signals during the first half of games.

"Has anyone done a statistical analysis of the Patriots' first-half vs. second-half performance (i.e., scoring, sacks by opponents)?"

Yes, for the playoffs, anyway. Conclusion: nothng to see here, folks.

"But overall, it's hard to see any pattern of stolen signals giving New England a second half advantage. The Patriots scored more points in the second half in eight of these 14 games, had just as many games where they were sacked more often in the second half than less (a team knowing the signals should be able to pick up the blitz) and piled up more yardage in the second half of only eight of the 14 games.

The Patriots might be cheaters, but looking at the stats it's hard to see how they were getting any advantage from a halftime film session during the playoffs. Or if they were, it didn't seem to help too much."

Estrella was approached by league officials on the Patriot's sideline, not the Jet's. The photo clearly shows a cameraman on the Jet's sideline. This is a BS photo.

Anonymous said...

On another note, he was approached during the middle of the first quarter. In the photo, the clock shows five minutes remaining. The "middle" of the quarter is somewhat ambiguous, but noneless, further evidence that the photo is BS.
I'm not saying it didn't happen. It certainly did, but lets not burn Belichick at the stake. I would loosly define cheating as benefiting from breaking the rules. He broke the rules, but there is no clear benefit from having broken them. It was a stupid mistake, but I just don't think it was a serious offense. This is already being compared to some of the biggest cheating scandals in the history of sports, which is just not correct. This isn't like performance enhancers, or corking bats, or throwing games.

But don't you think we should all be posting comments on websites that don't post BS photos and circle random cameramen?

Anonymous said...

This is bogus. The camera man in question was on the Patriots sideline, not directly next to the Jets team!

awats said...

The Camera Man on the sideline is on the Jets sideline and he is from NFL Films. There is another NFL Films Camera Man on the Patriots sideline as well. NFL Films is at all games throughout the league.

Mathew Estrella (the camera man employed by the Patriots) had Patriots credentials and was videotaping from a spot on the Patriots sideline which is not in plain view.

awats said...

To Anonymous... No one is disputing the fact that the Patriots probably would have won the game. Bellichick said he was videotaping for future reference, not that game. Whether or not this is true, we'll never know. The fact remains that the Patriots knew exactly what the Jets were going to do before they did anything. Who stands 8ft deep to return a kickoff? If he were standing in the usual spot, he would have returned the kickoff for the TD but he knew he was going to break the record for the longest return in the history of the game. There was no reason to cheat, but they did.
